Card Game

Using a game I leant in America that uses two or four packs of playing cards. I want to change the game by adding on a twist. And instead of seeing normal playing cards I want  to design a set made just for this game.

Card / Board games that are inspiring .

Each individual card for 'Playing Arts' is deigned by a different artists, I have a few personal favourites but what I mainly love about them is the diversity that is displayed using the same format.
Lizard Wizard is a board game that is stunningly illustrated by Annie Stegg, her painting brought to life a
magical world.
Dixtit is a board game that uses the illustrations of the cards to convey a multitude of concepts. There are design to provoke the imagination the players. The cards from the original set were made by artist Marie Cardouat however, there are extension packs that are designed by other artist for example; Revelations (the set shown in a picture in the blow) was created by Marina Coudray.

Ideas for Themes: Things that can be put in a sequence.

Fish - Surface, coral, wide ocean, deep sea.

British Army - Cadet up to Felid Marshel.

A Royal family - Duchess, duke, princess, prince queen, king.

Space - Star to Galaxies.

The Elements; Water - liquid, ice, fog, snow, sea water.

People in the Bible - Peter, Ruth ,
Paul, Moses, Joseph, Eve, Adam, Ester ...

Mythical creators - Slime,
cantor, vampire, werewolf, Griffin, Dragon ...

Photos taken from Pintrest and Google, to get a rough idea of what theme I want to go with.

Theme Chosen; Space.

I like the idea of using the Universe / Space as a theme because there are many different directions in which I can take the game along with it. I can also make it educational. Obviously, I like the potential of visual illustration.
Before starting the illustration
process, I need a clear plan of how the card game will be played. The two images below are a rough plan.

Roughs and Testing.

Looking at the card sizes, I plan on using the standard size. However, this may change as time passes.

After drawing out roughs of the cards, I plan to have game tails to see where the game can be improved.

This is a recording of a discussion after the card game was played. I will take into account the feedback I received and change the game accordingly.

Research on the objects and phenomenal's that could be used for celestial cards.

Many suggestions were made during this tail game, where the constellation cards were replaced with the celestial cards. Especially concerning the new cards (celestial cards), some of the suggestions will be taken to slightly change the game again.

Timetable

This timetable was created in Planner.

Draft for instructor manual.

These six images show the changes in the celestial cards. This will likely be the last change made to the game rules. A more in-depth explanation will be added to the instruction manual later on.

Update Timetable

The timetable has slightly moved around because there are now more cards; although the time frame is tighter, it is still doable.

Ideas for fonts.

I'm unsure of what font I'm going to be using, but this is the general direction in which I want to go. It will be added later on digitally.

Development of Planet Cards

I have designed 10 cards that will be placed into sequences throughout the game starting with the sun, ending with Neptune and two cards that will act as jockers , the comets.

Testers

After doing the sun, I used acrylic paint and oil pastels for all the cards. For most of the testers, I painted multiple  until I was satisfied with how it looked.

Creating Step by Step

These images show the process of how the cards were anatomically step by step. There is one step missing from the Jupiter set, a white layer of paint was put down before the yellow.

Back of the Planet and Stella / Celestial Cards

I wanted to make the back of the cards have a different illustrated language to the front. Which is why I chose to hand-print them.

induction for Print

These prints are done etching and lino. Although I have experience with Lino, it was my first time etching. I would like to use etching for the back design of my playing cards.

For a little extra research, I looked at the back of all the different sets of Playing Arts cards. Although I decided to go with something very different, looking at them still helped me to step away from the very traditional pattern.

The printing process

Prints

I made one clear-cut and the other slightly messy.

Adding colour

Using a process involving wood flakes, acid and wax, I add three colours to more prints.

Prints I plan on using.

Placement Mat

Each Player will use a placement mat to organise the cards.

Printing Process

I screen-printed the placement mat; the illustration needed to match the back of the card; however, the screenprinting is too different in style, so hopefully, I can redo it as an etching.  However, this is at the bottom of the list of things to do, if there is not enough time I will be leaving the place mat out as it's not essential to the game.

Celestial cards

The Clestical cards will affect your points and the actions used within the game.

Extra research

To better understand what I can do for the layout of the celestial cards, I looked at more board games.

Testing

Spiral Galaxy, Star Cluster, Crab Nebula, Ring Nebula, Cosmic Void, Blackhole, The Moon, Crescent moon, Quarter moon, Gibbous moon, Full moon, Space Station, An observatory, Astrophotography, Space carrier, Rocket (falcon 9), Hubble Telescope, Webb Telescope.
I used the same material for these cards: Acrylic paint and oil pastel.

Final Paintings / Drawings

With the Blackhole/Supernova, I preferred the tester to the final as it was too calm; however, I thought there was too much black coming through with the tester piece. So I chose to combine/layer them in Photoshop, bringing both the elements that I liked from each piece together.

An Example of a card's purpose.

The Gibbous Moon will allow you the player to repeat your turn, by picking up a card from the main deck.

The Crab Nebula card allows you to shuffle one of your supporting piles into the main deck.

These roughs are done on Procreate to get an idea of what the final production of the celestial cards could look like.
After talk to Vincent and testing things on indesign these initial drafts change quite a bit.

InDesgin

I have used InDesign to add symbols, text, and making the cards ready for print.

Researching Fonts

The Fronts I had previously looked at didn't fit the aesthetic I was going for with the card illustrations. These new fronts are closer to what I want. However, I think the best option is to design my own or use a symbol.

Notes Taken

Picture
I'm not very acknowledgeable about indesign so I ask my sister who is a graphic design  for help and she showed me who to use some of the basics. I was also help my one of the professors, Vincent. Here are the notes I toke.

Drawing symbols and front.

These are rough drawings for ideas of the making I want on the cards. I started with numbers, but it wasn't working with the atmosphere of the cards, so I changed it to symbols, and eventually landing on the idea of using Celtic knots to reposent the point system. However I'm still unsure about the text front that needs to go on to the celestial cards.

Printing Options

After looking at several places to print my card game, I'm considering using these the most.

Launch Lab

https://launchtabletop.com/launch-lab/overview
Picture
Launch Lab is a company that specialises in printing and making board and card games. They have a variety of sizes for the cards and boxes, and they print instruction manuals that will fit in the boxes.
This is place I would like to go to for my card game; however, because they are American-based, it might not arrive for my degree show.

Print from your sofa

https://printfromyoursofa.co.uk/tarot-cards
Picture
This printer is in the south of the uk, They house on making Cards, This Is where I will most likely go for the printing. But I have in one set than they normally work with so it is unlikely that I be able to get a box printed off them.

TradePrint

https://www.tradeprint.co.uk/?
Picture
This printer shop was recommend to me by my sister, a graphic design. They do print appointment cards which are similar to the Size needed for my card. But sadly the prices are a little to steep for me.

Getting my Cards printed

I decided to go with Print.from.your.sofa, however, rather than go for one of there stranded pack I emailed them about a specialised order, They where will do it but sadly the price was too high for me.
Picture
Picture
Through friend at uni I was given a recommendation to a local printer Border Offset, and also they do not specialises in Cards for games they were happy to print them and the price was good too.

Ad's For the Card Game

I have put suff I have already designed on to photoshop and indesign to create ad's.

Instruction video

Although I have called it an in instruction video it is closer to  a play though of the card game. And because it was made very quickly it is sadly not of the greatest quality.
This video will hopefully be improved on or replaced by the degree show.
